Energy giants from the UAE and the United Kingdom have agreed to collaborate on the development of sustainable hydrogen hubs

Agreements were made by ADNOC, BP, and Masdar as part of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's tour to the United Kingdom.

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), BP, and Masdar have announced the signing of strategic framework agreements to extend the UAE and UK's collaboration in energy sustainability.

The agreements involve the possible creation of clean hydrogen hubs with a capacity of at least 2 gigawatts in both the UK and the UAE.

The agreements, according to the state news agency WAM, highlight the country's leadership in technology-driven solutions to the global climate problem, as well as a shared commitment to generating new economic opportunities through decarbonisation, both locally and internationally.

ADNOC, BP, and Masdar will aim to work on the construction of clean hydrogen hubs in the UAE and the UAE at an initial size of 1GW in the UAE and 1GW in the UK, building on the UAE's position as an anchor investor in some of the UK's largest offshore wind projects.

The hydrogen agreements also coincide with the United Kingdom's recently stated promise to produce 5GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, as well as the UAE's Nationally Determined Contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 23.5 percent compared to business as usual in 2030.

ADNOC and BP will also identify potential areas for collaboration in greenfield carbon capture and underground storage, as well as best-in-class methane detection platforms, while Masdar and BP will look into opportunities to develop, build, and operate sustainable energy and mobility solutions in urban population centers.

The framework agreements were signed on the occasion of a visit to the UK by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Al Jaber said: "The UK and UAE have enjoyed decades of strong economic ties and the agreements signed between ADNOC, Masdar and bp will serve to deepen the strategic relationship between our countries. We look forward to building upon this legacy to strengthen both countries’ ambitions to generate economic growth through low-carbon initiatives."

They were signed by Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, ADNOC managing director and Group CEO, and Masdar chairman, as well as Bernard Looney, CEO of BP.

Hydrogen is a clean fuel that generates just water when used in a fuel cell. Hydrogen may be generated from a number of home resources, including natural gas, nuclear power, biomass, and renewable energy sources such as the sun and wind.

The efforts stated in the strategic framework agreements will need to be approved by the appropriate regulatory bodies.
