| Mohammed launches Dubai Metro trial run |

UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the trial run of Dubai Metro, which ran for 11km between Jebal Ali Station and Ibn Battuta Station.
Sheikh Mohammed took the train accompanied by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Deputy Ruler Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Cabinet Affairs Minister Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Commander General of Dubai Police Lt. General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Director of Protocol and Hospitality Khalifa Saeed Sulaiman, senior officials and the technical and engineering team of Dubai Metro.
Sheikh Mohammed was received by Chairman and CEO of Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Mattar Al Tayer, who briefed him on Jebal Ali Station, one of 24 elevated stations with a design capacity for over 11,000 passengers per hour.
Al Tayer said that 19 pedestrian crossings will be installed on Sheikh Zayed Road to facilitate access to train stations and ease traffic for metro commuters.
Sheikh Mohammed also commissioned the Metro's internet wireless service (Wi-Fi), which covers all Red Line and Green Line carriages. The service, provided by Du, will allow passengers to use their laptops during their journeys.
Sheikh Mohammed congratulated the Dubai Metro team and praised their efforts in rolling out one of the UAE and Dubai's landmarks.
Al Tayer expressed hope that the project will contribute in boosting the national economy and its drive towards sustainable development.
Once completed, the Dh15.5 billion Dubai Metro will be the world's largest automated driverless metro system with Green and Red Lines extending 75km, consisting of 47 stations, including 10 underground stations. There are over 24,000 engineers, technicians and workers involved in the construction of the project. |
